Crystals and precious stones have been gaining attention of the adventuress dreaming of getting rich overnight, of the scientists, rich men, collectors and mere mortals. All of them with their respective reasons, just as we, intending to present a small part of something enthusiasts find on their crystal roads. We dedicated the cover of this November issue to minerals and crystals for the same reason. The end of the year is an opportunity to sum up what has been done and to plan future activities. Banja Luka mayor Dragoljub Davidovi} speaks of Banja Luka development. From the Pop Music Festival in Biha} comes the story about a man who in short lifetime achieved what many couldn’t even if they lived for 100 years. In memory of To{e Proeski.

Ovogodi{nji Dani minerala, stijena i fosila svojevrsna su posveta 145. obljetnici ro|enja i 90. obljetnici smrti velikog hrvatwere held in October for the 5th time. Around thirty mineralogists, collectors and other crystal fans from Slovenia, Serbia and B&H exhibited at the show, and delegations of numerous science associations were present as well. The fact that brings special joy is that the young minerals and crystals collectors from Kre{evo, mostly members of Kre{evski citrin had their stands with rich offer. skog istra`iva~a Dragutina Lermana, koji je posljednje dane svog `ivota proveo u Kre{evu. Osobito sam sretan {to u ovakvoj me|unarodnoj ekspediciji zastupam svoju dragu domovinu Hrvatsku. Izme|u 1882. i 1896.

death of the great Croatian explorer Dragutin Lerman who spent the last days of his life in Kre{evo. Twenty year old Lerman joined for the expedition to Africa, published in Europe by Henry Morton Stanley, one of the most famous explorers of the Black continent of the 19th century. I am especially pleased to represent my dear homeland Croatia in this international expedition, many think I am exaggerating but I am deeply convinced that I am not leaving for Congo out of wickedness or selfishness – wrote Lerman to his friend just before he left Po`ega basin and left in search of the treasure of the Black continent.

He had less than 20 years of age when he joined famous expedition by Stanley exploring Congo. He immediately applied to a call by Stanley which was published all over Europe and later continued his adventure by cruise all over Europe and learned several foreign languages. Lerman left to Africa together with Napoleon Luk{i}, marine officer from Karlovac. Lerman learned several native dialects much earlier than other explorers in Congo, which resulted for Stanley to entrust Lerman with cooperation with chiefs of several African tribes. AFTER AFRICAN JUNGLES, ON TRACES OF THE OLD SAXONS Lerman generally enjoys trust of expedition leader, and European newspapers mark his as the most deserving member, while Belgium government (King Leopold I) names him chief commissary for Eastern Congo (Zaire). Between 1882 and 1896 Lerman left for Congo four times and spend 3.000 days in African jungles, regularly writing about in a journal kept in Croawww.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

tian Academy of Sciences and Arts archives. Lerman didn’t forget his homeland. On each return to his homeland he brought rich collections of weapons, tools and objects from black culture which are all exhibited at Zagreb Ethnographic museum. There are several toponyms with Croatian names on the first geographical map published by the Belgium government. I noticed beautiful slopes, while crossing the river and to a memory that a Croat discovered them I named them Zrinski slopes – wrote Lerman in his journal. After return from Congo, Lerman settled in the Bosnian town Kre{evo. He followed traces of old Saxons for the full six years, exploring abandoned gold mines and other mine treasures. Crushed after six years and exhausted by malaria and tropical diseases, he was by his own wish buried in Kre{evo under Tilia, which stands Kod prijelaza preko rijeke opazih krasne slapove i na taj spo- above his grave until today. men da ih je jedan Hrvat otkrio prozovem ih Zrinskim slapovima, napisao je Lerman u svom dnevniku. Tamo punih {est godina krstari stopama starih Sasa, ispituju}i napu{tena nalazi{ta zlata i istra`uju}i druga rudna bogatstva. Antunom Lovri}em i dopredsjednicom Katicom Bartosek, polo`io vijence i cvije}e na grob Po`e`anina Dragutina Lermana, istra`iva~a Afrike i stanovnika Kre{eva.

CRYSTALS HAVE MEMORIES? Just before the event begun, a lecture of use of crystals in medicine was delivered in Kre{evo. Introduction speech was delivered by Krsto Rakonjac, and the lecture named Wondrous world of crystals – precious and semi-precious stones which helps was delivered by Dragoslav Petrovi}, they are both from Belgrade. Petrovi} presented numerous theories still not widely known, from the fact that crystals are in fact living beings which have their memories to specific illustrations of energy movement in a body. Part of the lecture which speaks of use of crystals and precious stones in medicine, as a prevention in everyday lives, and in treatment of certain diseases got the most attention. Petrovi} even made short analysis of Kre{evo region considering the well-known fact that there are ores in that region with malign effect (uranium, quicksilver, arsenic etc.), and of crystal usage found in this region (citrine, smoky quartz, white quartz).

BH PLANINE I IZLETI[TA

Sarajevska ljepotica planinskog lanca
Mountain range beauty of Sarajevo

planini se Platno, Veliko, are six – Crno, Platno, Veliko, Suho and Lake NaSuhoi jezero inalazi {estzajezera - Bijelo, Crno,kao1957. godine There bodies lakeson Bijelo, mountain and put under protection in Jezero pod ^ardakom - koja su, prirodne riunder ^ardak – the significant as natural rarijetkosti objekti zna~ajni nau~na istra`ivanja, ties and for scientific research stavljena pod za{titu dr`ave. Danas je tu nu`an krajnji oprez zbog neeksplodiranih mina zaostalih iz posljednjeg rata. U cjelokupnom planinskom lancu oko Sarajeva planinu Treskavicu mnogi su ubrajali me|u najljep{e. Stijene blizu vrha i sada nose ime ]abenske. Utmost caution is necessary today, since there are lot of unexploded mines, left behind, after the last war. From the whole mountain range around Sarajevo, many classify mountain Treskavica as one of the most beautiful. Treskavica is South of Sarajevo, surrounded by mountains Lelija (2032 m.a.s.l.), Viso~ica (1967 m.a.s.l.), Bjela{nica (2067 m.a.s.l.) and Jahorina (1916 m.a.s.l.). It got its name after earthquakes, which is most probably true since it is located in an active seismic zone (Treskavica/tresti – to shake). Its highest peak is Paklje{ or ]aba (2086 m.a.s.l.). It got this second name after place of worship which was located at the top of the mountain. PRAYERS AT THE TOP Namely, locals from the village Turovska Treskavica used to climb each year by the end of the summer at the top of Treskavica to perform salat (one of the five pillars of Islam practiced by Muslims in supplication to Allah, God) and to pray for good life and happiness. Cliffs near the top are still called ]abenske. Mountain climbers used to call this peak \okin toranj before the last war because during fifties of the last century there was a small metal tower built at the top serving as a shelter. Tower builder Rade Lasi} did not allow for tower to be named after him, and it was named after tower construction creator \oko Petrovi}. Treskavica has been completely processed as far as mountain climbing is in question, as four transversal mountain roads existed before. Numerous alpinist markings have been carved into rocks Treska~a, Zubova, Oblika, as well as ]abenske and Nikola rocks. As far as mountain facilities are concerned, there was a mountain lodge Josip Sigmund on Kozja Luka (1510 m.a.s.l.) and a house on Sustavac (1180 m.a.s.l.). Lodge on Kozja Luka was the biggest and most beautiful in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both facilities were destroyed in the last war. The mountain lodge was

Stoga i nisu date preporuke i opisi predratnih planinskih puteva i staza.

put on fire and the house was destroyed. These facilities were operated by Treskavica mountain association from Sarajevo. By the end of 2004 mountain house on Sustavac was renovated and is now operated by Treskavica mountain association from Trnovo. The house is an hour of walk away from Trnovo. There is waterfall Skakvac, of seasonal character, in the vicinity of the house, on the road to Kozja Luka. @ELJEZNICA SPRING A visit to Kazani, near Turovo, is very interesting, since the place was created by @eljeznica River on its way breaking through stone beam, and made its way out. Water is boiling as if it’s in a caldron in that pass and it got its name after that (Kazan – caldron). Kazani are providing remarkable image of nature beauty, and were as such put under protection in 1957. A stroll to @eljeznica spring is also nice and is about 30 minute walk from Godinja. There are six glacier origin lakes on the mountain: Bijelo (1697 m.a.s.l.), Crno (1675 m.a.s.l.), Platno (1570 m.a.s.l.), Veliko (1550 m.a.s.l.), Suho (1630 m.a.s.l.) and lake under ^ardak (1220 m.a.s.l.). As natural rarities and objects significant for scientific research, they were put under protection in 1957.

KAKO STI]I DO TRESKAVICE? Pristup iz Sarajeva do polazne ta~ke: automobilom ili autobusom, asfaltnim putem preko Trnova do Turova (oko 44 kilometra). ATTENTION, MINES! Considering the fact that during war 1992-1995, hard and numerous battles were fought on Treskavica, strolling on the mountain is not advisable because of lots of unexploded deadly war remnants. For that reason, recommendations and descriptions of pathways existing before the war were not given. But, If you still decide for mountain climbing on Treskavica, be extremely cautious, and you are doing it at your own risk. HOW TO REACH TRESKAVICA? Outset: Turovi village near Trnovo (820 m.a.s.l.) From Sarajevo by a car or a bus, on asphalt road to Turovo, through Trnovo (about 44 kilometres) www.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

BiH CITY REVIEW: Gospodine Davidovi}u, kako biste nekome ko dolazi u Banju Luku predstavili grad na ~ijem ste ~elu? Dakle, Banja Luka danas?

BH CITY REVIEW: Mr Davidovi}, how would you present Banja Luka with you at the head to someone coming here? Namely, Banja Luka today? DAVIDOVI]: Banja Luka is the administrative, cultural, economic, and university centre of Republic of Srpska. It is also the most orderly and the most organized city in B&H. City administration is functioning better than five or ten years ago, or even before the war. According to the data from institutions and organizations tracking collective work of local institutions in RS and B&H, our administration is classified as one the most successful ones and we received numerous acknowledgments for that. Our utmost goal is to be as efficient as possible in providing services to our citizens. The fact that ten years ago we couldn’t praise with international cooperation and now we are called for cooperation and partnership from several European and world countries speaks for itself and about reputation we have abroad. For that reason Banja Luka is, according to our results, one of the most significant cities of the region today. BH CITY REVIEW: You have been Banja Luka mayor for the past eight years. Is there anything that you emphasize from what has been done for the citizens in order to live better? DAVIDOVI]: Many projects and programs were realized from difwww.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

dosnabdijevanja, razvoj vodovodne i kanalizacione mre`e, izgradnju i rekonstrukciju gradskih saobra}ajnica, za {ta je od 2000. godine ulo`eno oko 70 miliona KM, zatim izgradnju i modernizaciju lokalnih i nekategorisanih puteva, kojih je za osam proteklih godina izgra|eno vi{e od 500 km. Izgradili smo novu rasvjetu u 85 ulica, a rekonstruisali u 140 ulica.

ferent areas out of which I pick out making conditions of stabile water-supply, water-supply line and sewage system development, construction and reconstruction of city streets for which around 70 million BAM has been invested since 2000, then construction and modernization of local and uncategorized roads, which were built in length of 500 kilometres for the past eight years. We have installed new street illumination in 85 streets, and reconstructed the old one in 140 streets. We established parking system in the city, keeping city public transport under control, and Banja Luka is the only city in the region which has unique monthly ticket. We organized waste collection and management system, improved cleaning of the city and are keeping hygiene of public places and greenery. Large number of apartment units has been built to accommodate families of fallen soldiers and the war disabled ones for which around ten million BAM was provided. Expert personnel were trained for help in solving refugees and returnees problems in the city, as well as work with non-government and youth organisations. Communal police and civil protection work has been organized and in due time system of collecting information of the city status. We formed local development institutions: Tourist organisation, City development agency and Centre for development and improvement of villages. City is involved in numerous projects which are not in its immediate responsibility, such as co financing of electric power supply projects for Banja Luka settlements and recovery of schools and facilities for pupils and students accommodation. Well, this is BiH CITY REVIEW: Vi }ete i u naredne ~etiri godine biti gra- some of the work we did in the past eight years, with the main dona~elnik. Skup{- BH CITY REVIEW: you will be the mayor for the next four tina Grada je usvojila Strategiju razvoja grada 2007-2015. godine. years. What do city authorities plan to do – which projects are the priorities? DAVIDOVI]: First of all, the development trend must continue. City assembly adopted the 2007-2015 city development strategy. It is the strategic document compiled of 195 projects worth about two billion BAM. We will plan funds in out budget for 2009, for realization of some of those projects. Generally speaking, what we will do in the next four years, what we have done so far, is to create better conditions as possible for city development for life improvement of our citizens. First it is referred to the construction of infrastructure, creating conditions for employment and social security system improvement. Project wise, it is the continuation of water supply system and roads network, hot water network recovery, solving problems of waste waters and construction of all other necessary facilities such as sport fields, pools, skating rink, schools, kindergartens, ambulances etc. BH CITY REVIEW: To end our conversation, what is your message to the citizens of Banja Luka and to visitors, tourists, guests? DAVIDOVI]: I would like to call all interested to come to our city. They surely won’t regret it since Banja Luka and its citizens have always been good hosts. I hope their time spent in our city will remain in nice memory. And to our citizens I wish to say that the Administrative city service will continue to do everything in its jurisdiction to provide as better life conditions as possible. We BIHCITYREVIEW

MILKAN LEGENDARNI I NEPONOVLJIVI
LEGENDARY, THE ONE AND ONLY – MILKAN

speak of Banja Luka hospitality and o tradiciji hotelijerstva i ugostiteljstva, bomention the name of Govoriti neoprostiv.banjalu~kogne pomenuti ime„al~ak“, spadalo Todition, bohemiaanand humanity and not tocatering industry tra-a hemiji i humanosti, a pritom Milkana Goji}a Milkan Goji} – is unforgivable sin. – uzvrati Milkan. BIHCITYREVIEW bum or enfant terrible by birth – but truly a master of Banja Luka hospitality and catering industry, was representative of Palace hotel just before the World War II and right after the War – the director of notorious Palace hotel. Milkan was (and remained) unique in his chronicles, but also in the memories of Banja Luka citizens and students who were under his tuition. Before and after the WWII Milkan was remembered for personally visiting marketplace every morning, with three of his assistants following him with baskets in which they would collect vegetables and other products master Milkan would choose. Before the WWII, at the beginning of each school year he would visit Grammar and Teacher Training school directors who would give him the list of top ten students from the countryside who are poor…Those students received a free lunch every day in Palace hotel (together with the hotel staff)… On the other hand, Milkan mingled with intellectuals, politicians, but also with Banja Luka tramps, and as PhD, Kemal Halimovi} used to say: after nights of soaking with alcohol Milkan would buy hundreds of lepinja (flatbreads) which he distributed among the poor, and the pinnacle was when he climbs to the podium (in the former park), assembles the poor and gives away all the money he has with himself, in his pockets. By the end of the thirties of the 20th century master MIlkan was driving in the latest model of Ford, and also had a habit to put a piano with the whole hotel orchestra on a hired horse chariot (with podium), and they would drive and sing serenades during night or early morning hours… This (professional) caterer loved horses. On one of the occasions he bestrode on a horse through Gospodska Street in broad daylight, and then went up the stairs of the former State Bank (as to take some money).

40

Milkana Goji}a sudac pita „s kim karta“.

Gendarme was guarding the building who addressed him: - Mr Milkan, this isn’t a place for a horse! - This is not the only horse coming into this bank! – Milkan replied. The War came and went. Not many people know that master had a secret room in the hotel where he hid Banja Luka Jews and illegal partisan patriots (during police raids). After the War – Milkan (after many complications, because, for God’s sake, he is bourgeois) became Palace hotel director. Both, The Satan and the Devil wouldn’t let this gambler rest: he again opened the green cloth saloon where the most famous card players would meet… This time, there were ministers, mayors, commissaries, officers and the new government party directors. Among them \urekan, former Baja Luka State Security Office (UDBA) director (this is his nickname, and the senior Banja Luka citizens will know who he is). Of course, Milkan was under surveillance (again), because one Catholic priest named Pero had been coming to his hotel. Since already mentioned \urekan started losing big money playing cards – one night police raid occurred. Cards were confiscated, participants (with Milkan as a major player) were apprehended, questionings were performed, and then master appears (as a witness) on court. The judge asked Milkan who he plays cards with. Milkan said he was playing cards with his fiends \urekan, Momir, Rudi with…(all those were notable Banja Luka statesmen). The judge interrupts him: I’m not asking you for friends Mr Goji}, but for those others – kerns and criminals! Milkan had friends in high places; the judge pulled back (after certain interventions) and master Goji} continued his primary mission – to get closer the future caterers to European level. It was inevitable for the most dignified statesmen of the former B&H and the former Yugoslavia to take photos with Milkan. And he used to take off their awards, attach them to his lapel and take pictures with his guests. Witty, direct, refined Goji} (s orednjem) i Osman Maglajli} and approachable: all that was legendary Milkan Goji} who educated generations of top-notch waiters, chefs and tourist personnel. Milkan Goji} was one of the first to continue business tradition of certain European bars whose personnel should speak at least two world languages. Banja Luka Tourist-catering school was established on his educational premises and before the last unfortunate war in B&H it produced staff which traditionally dominated season engagements in the most elite Mediterranean tourist destinations of neighbouring (coastal and insular) Croatia. Milkan Goji} left this world in the beginning of the nineties of the last century. In time, not to witness everything horrible that happened to B&H and his Banja Luka, for what Milkan would (most definitely) called – SH.T (!) www.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

And This morning, with frostbitten fingers, on the burdock crown, full of grains, blackened with humid last fall, I’m sticking the target, for a new song, new goldfinch to land on it, and remain there during winter, singing well-known notorious melodies. Only the singer, a decoy, needs to be put on a low arid branch and as soon possible to hide, behind a bush, hands in pockets. It’s cold. First cluster will soon fly over, singing, looking for all those places where good meal could be found and to an invitation of beautiful red-yellow-black goldfinch, a singer, and not stopping with his cheerful jolly tune. Or they will fly over, cunningly, searching for warmer places. Who knows? Chimneys are smouldering on the red roofs; its time to go home, a new day is starting. Life is more comfortable. Visit to Mostar can also be rounded with additional cultural events during the Mostar summer festival. Included in the festival are [anti} poetry evenings, International Mostar Blues Festival, traditional Drawing Annals, only exhibition in B&H in which monetary awards are given, and the 2nd World Music Festival in Mostar, exhibitions and performances. There is also traditional Old Bridge Dives which is additional attraction for tourists, and those visiting Mostar by the end of the summer, after the Summer Festival is over, will be able to attend Mostar Days of Film. Tourists and guests complained for the last couple of years that there are no enough public parking areas for cars and especially the buses which bring numerous tourists from Dalmatia and Me|ugorje to visit Mostar, and there is also a problem with public toilets. This problem is somewhat relieved thanks to Franciscan monastery next to St. Peter and Paul Church who built Modern parking area for around 100 cars and twenty buses, and also public toilet. Parking is chargeable on week days and on Saturday, and on Sunday during Mass in church use of parking and toilet is free. There were also complaints to bad tourist info panels with directions because tourists were

Sada turisti i gosti Mostara znatno br`e i jednostavnije sti`u do najzna~ajnijih spomenika kulture i ostalih va`nih objekata u gradu na Neretvi.

often frustrated by spending their time in Mostar looking for directions to old part of the city. That won’t be a problem this year since project of tourist info panels was done according to European standards. Now, it is much faster and easier for the tourists to find their way to most important cultural monuments and other important places in the City on Neretva. Project includes installing tourist info panels in basic colours: brown, blue, black, white and yellow. Mili Biljavica, manager of “Fortunatours”, the biggest tourist agency in Mostar, considers that despite evident improvements, there is a lot more to be done in Mostar to make effects of tourism more significant. The parking close to the heart of the city, near “Ru`a“ hotel should be more organised, and problem of beggars and cleanliness of the city should be resolved, activity of tourist inspection intensified because many still practice tourism illegally in Mostar, which is by long-term bad for those doing it legally, and to tourism in Mostar in general.

Iza nas ostao je mir stoljetnih hrastova i bukava, bistri izvori i usnula dolina Neretvice, a ~ula napunjena ljepotom ~istih planinskih boja i mirisa.

Attraction of this visit was also the Neretvica spring (at the attitude of 1.580 meters), which was enchanting for all the participants of this off-road excursion, and especially the oldest, 72-year old Osman Hero and Muharem Alibegovi}, as was for the youngest, 14-year old Sefir Terzi}. This same trip through Dusina - Kozigrad – Konjic was made by the last Bosnian queen Katarina Kosa~a as she was leaving Bobovac in 1463 on a way to Dubrovnik and Rome. The village in Neretvica valley, Jasenik, welcomed participants of this off-road excursion with blueberries, and song which continued that evening at the Festival of amateur singers of B&H. As we were leaving we left the peace of secular oak-trees and beeches, crystal-clear springs and a dreaming valley of Neretvica, and our senses filled with beauty of clear mountain colours and scents. This notation was made in a course of two-day tourist-culturaleconomic manifestation 2008 Blueberry Days which was organised in the end of July by the Neretvica – Klis organisaton. Drlja~a dolazi 1896. godine u Sarajevo, gdje zavr{ava bravarski zanat. Sarajevo je glavni grad Lazareve rane mladosti, potom austrougarski Be~, mediteranski Rim, a onda Pariz. Od 9. jula 1914. godine, kada se javlja Zajedni~kom ministarstvu finansija za BIHCITYREVIEW villa, the place of death of this last Bogumil (as he liked to be called), into a painting colony. Drlja~a lived and painted in [anti}’s villa on Borci, near the Bora~ko Lake and at the foot of the mountain Prenj for 31 years. Two years ago, the Committee for Preservation of National Monuments of BiH pronounced the villa, which has been in the ownership of the family of the famous poet Aleksa [anti} since 1910, to be a monument of national value. [anti}’s villa was built in 1902 by head of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Baron Benko, but eight years after he sold it to family [anti}. Lazar Drlja~a was a great BiH painter. He was known for his paintings and his unusual way of life. He was an individual and a man of nature. He was born on October 10, 1882 in the village Blatna near Bosanska Krupa, to the family of resident Mihajlo Drlja~a. Despite the fact that they were poor the parents decided to send him to school. Drlja~a came to Sarajevo in 1896 where he learned the craft of locksmithing. In 1906 he passed the final exam at the secondary Technical School at the Construction Department, and in October he passed the entrance exam at Vienna Academy. He was accepted to the class of Professor Christian Griepenkerl. In 1911 he got an invitation to participate in the International exhibition in Rome. Sarajevo was the most important town of Lazar’s early youth and then follow the Austro-Hungarian Vienna, the Mediterranean Rome, and finally Paris. Out of the eight years in Paris the first three were in fauvism style accord-

Do Drugog svjetskog rata `ivio je u [anti}evoj vili, a tokom tog rata silom prilika seli u planinsku kolibu u Kotarad`ama.

ing to both his life and paintings (Drlja~a had a studio and researched the Louvre), while the remaining five years remained secret and the people from his town of birth did not know much about Lazar from that period. Since July 9, 1914 when he contacted the Common Finance Ministry for Bosnia and Herzegovina with an appeal for help in returning home because he had “finished studying in Paris”, till 1919 nothing was known about Drlja~a. In 1919 it was found that he was located in southern Italy in a concentration camp. After returning to his place of birth Lazar found out that his father had died and it made his weak health condition even worse. He found temporary shelter at his stepbrother Nikola’s house. He spent most of the time strolling around the neighboring mountains and floating on the Una on the vessel he had constructed (modeled like a Phoenician vessel). BOGOMIL WAY OF LIFE ON BORCI Drlja~a was already then preparing himself for a decade-long Bogomil way of life on Borci by constructing a “painting shack” in his birth town. Before he definitely became a captive of mountain beauty in 1931, Drlja~a often traveled. First he went from home by a wooden two-wheel car to Sarajevo and later traveled to Herzegovina stopping by the valley of the river Drina, to finally end up in Mostar and at the bottom of Durmitor. He was admired by art professionals all over the world. He exhibited across Europe and on one occasion he said that he painted for the love of it and exhibited merely in order to survive. He was poor for most of the time of his life but he was rich in spirit. He lived in the nature and painted motifs of nature even though he had great success with his distinct portraits. The strength of this artist’s expression can be seen on Drlja~a’s preserved oil paintings. After strolling around the world for long, and the expulsion from Sardinia where he spent four years during World War I, he returned to his village Blatna. He lived freely for four years without restraints. He lived in the nature and from what it gave him; he discovered a brand new world, a world outside the civilization, and felt much better after all the years of rambling and suffering which he put behind. That time would become crucial for his later life. In early spring of 1930, by the wooden car he had made by himself, Lazar Drlja~a arrived to Konjic for the first time and in 1931 he definitely decided to settle down on the Bora~ko Lake. Until World War II he lived in [anti}’s villa and during the war he moved to a mountain shack in Kotard`e. The post-war period which did not treat the “artist in Drlja~a” well, made him deal with mowers and forestry. He started “failing from the burdens of life”. In the fire of 1946 that started in the shack, all of his paintings were burned except for one. Lazar moved to a shack in Ja`ve on Borci and after that the municipality authorities in Konjic donated him [anti}’s villa in which he lived till his death in 1970. He could not get over the loss of the greatest part of his painting collection in the fire because his most creative painting period had completely vanished in a second. In the population census of 1953 Drlja~a declares himself as “academic painter, architect, technician, locksmith, distiller, mower, miner, cook, digger… ” www.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

Poslije rata Drlja~in `ivot postaje sve vi{e odre|en svakodnevnicom, a manje slikanjem. Poslije gotovo dvadeset godina, 1959. Drlja~a silazi prvi put u grad radi operacije karcinoma na usni. Drlja~a sve vi{e osje}a te{ko breme godina i mu~nog `ivota. Pri`eljkuje smrt. U dnevniku zapisuje: “No} mu~na i bolna, suzenje i crne slutnje. Ostao sam go i bos.

REMAINED FAITHFUL TO THE MOUNTAINS AND FREEDOM He declared himself as a Bogomil. It was another way of expressing rebellion and keeping his freedom. After the war Drlja~a’s life became more determined by everyday life and less by painting. Twenty years after, in 1959, Drlja~a came down to town because of the cancer surgery on his lip. Due to the weak health condition he asks to settle down in [anti}’s villa. Drlja~a started feeling the burden of the years of the harsh life. He craves for death to take him. He wrote in his diary: “A night tedious and painful of crying and black augury. Today, on January 4, it has been two months since November 4, 1962 when I asked a man to take my life and ease my pain.” Lazar spoke about the life on the brows of the mountain Prenj, on the coast of the Bora~ko Lake, and the beautiful nature of Borci: I encountered many healthy herbs and flowers. Because I remained faithful to the mountain and freedom, men and women – all of them liked me and helped me. Gangs stole my paintings in the war. I was left without anything. Luckily I had two larger canvases on easel and oil paintings on them. I scraped off the color and made myself a suit. He used to make colors for the paintings by himself from natural material which he would find on the mountain Prenj. Soon, in 1970, death arrived and his life could be described through an inscription on a monument: “I was persistent and decent till I died”. Lazar Drlja~a died on July 13, 1970. In late 1932 he said: “You see - after Rome and Paris, which is where I worked and exhibited, I turned into a hard Bosnian rural man. I am in fact a Bogomil.” His wish was to be buried as a Bogomil, and cenotaphs are usually put on the graves of Bogomils. It remained written that Drlja~a lived as a lonely wolf and that he rarely visited his neighbors. He also rarely accepted honors. He used to say coffee was a poison and when, on rare occasions, he did agree to have a few cups, he would always remove the top layer from the coffee saying poison was concentrated in it. He was known as a man with a sharp tongue especially in the times when one could not say whatever he wanted. At some time in 1954 a party conference was held on Borci, at which Nijaz Begta{evi}, former head of the Sreski court from Konjic was supposed to speak. He was an illegal man and known revolutionary from Konjic, who got highly positioned due to those

A on kada ugleda Nijaza, kojeg je dobro poznavao, upita: “[ta to ti, bolan, Nijaze, ovdje radi{?” “Evo, dr`im konferenciju, gospon Lazo, ja sam predsjednik Suda.”

factors. Originally he was a tailor. When the conference started, an anecdote tells, our painter dropped down in the hall, grey bearded, meagerly dressed and with own hand-made sandals on his feet. All heads turned to the strange newcomer. And he, when spotting Nijaz, whom he knew very well, asked. “What are you doing here, Nijaz?” “I am holding a conference Sir Lazo, I am the head of the court.” Lazar Drlja~a laughed out loud and without any holding back, he said: “Oh, my Nijaz, I advise you to tailor suits for people – that’s what you have been educated for, and leave justice to those who have been educated therefor.” And that’s what Lazar Drlja~a was like.

i Panonska brojne druge turisti~ke Pannonian lakes, Panonski slapovi gastroregije, jezera, uzsu predstavljeni risti~ka Pannonianonslopes andTuzlafair in Ravenna, with other numerous potencijale Tuzlanske uspje{no pro{log tourist potentials of region, were successfully presented mjeseca na Sajmu ponude u talijanskoj Raveni. Tu last month Gastro offer Italy. Kvalitetna promocija turisti~kih potencijala na sajmovima u BiH, zemljama regije i evropskim zemljama, me|u kojima su sajmovi u Be~u, Stuttgartu, Grazu i sada u Raveni daju konkretne rezultate. Tourist Community got the special attention form Italians and visitors from other parts of the world with multimedia presentation showing attractive tourist destinations and authentic BH cuisine. Especially great interest was shown for Tuzla that Ravenna has been developing strong friendship relationship with for years now. On this occasion, eminent Tuzla bakers form Huki} and Kabil bakeries stayed in Ravena and presented their ways of making bakery products to the visitors, with special accent on lepinja or somun (double-layered flat or pocket breads) as the original Bosnian product. We had very important presentation at the Ravenna fair. Warmth, friendship and rarely seen hospitality shown by the hosts resulted with announcement of serious plans in tourist promotion, cooperation and exchange. We presented Tuzla Canton tourist potentials to the visitors of the fair through couple of thousands prospects, video materials and souvenirs showing quality of our tourist offer. We were fascinated with the fact that Italians are literary in love with Tuzla, said Almazaga ]atovi}, Tuzla Canton Tourist Community director for B&H CITY REVIEW. And to confirm the fact that there is larger interest for other destinations in Tuzla Canton is the increasing number of tourist and guests. With interest for the new destinations – salt Pannonian lake, Archaeological park – lake dwelling settlement in Tuzla, tourist find equally attractive old Bosnian market places in Grada~ac, Gra~anica, old city of Srebrenk, Djevoja~ka cave near Kladanj, mountain, winter and adventure tourism on Konjuh mountain, village tourism in Kladanj and Srebrenik, and other attractive destinations for pleasant stay, presented in word and picture by B&H CITY REVIEW. Studies have shown that specific forms of tourism, as opposed to massive tourism are gaining more attention. Destinations marked with specific tourist motives attracting visitors led to village and eco tourism, religion tourism, hunting and fishing tourism, urban tourism, sport-recreational tourism, health tourism, cultural and educational tourism. Those are the destinations in the Tuzla Canton area. These locations wouldn’t be available to tourists without appropriate presentation. They are aware of that at the Tuzla Canton tourist community, and committed for the tourist potentials to be presented adequately in pace with the latest trends on as many locations of the world as possible, this is the motto and example other tourist communities in B&H should look-up to. Quality promotion of the tourist potentials on fairs in B&H, countries in region and European countries, among which are the fairs in Vienna, Stuttgart, Graz and now Ravenna are giving concrete results. www.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

Op}ina Gra~anica planira izvr{iti detaljnu rekonstrukciju i restauraciju sahat-kule.

>>>Razgovarala/Conversation by: Anela Halilagi} With the end of local elections in B&H and re-election of M. Sc. Hamdija Lipova~a with convincing and unbeatable majority, he accomplished special electoral victory in Biha} and the opportunity to continue with the commenced projects he has been realizing successfully for the last four years. About everything accomplished and what needs to be done he talks for BH CITY REVIEW.

BH CITY REVIEW: Mr Lipova~a, we congratulate you on your new mandate as a mayor of Biha} municipality. What is your comment on both Your and more than convincing victory of SDP (Social Democratic Party), party that candidated you? LIPOVA^A: first, I would like to thank to Yours, but to all other congratulations from numerous citizens, friends and people who contacted me in the last few days and expressed enthusiasm for both my and SDP electoral result in Biha}. This victory is the product of everything done, identified by the Biha} citizens and also organisation of all campaign elements, which was done according to the European standards. We didn’t use language of hatred, we weren’t succumbed to passions, but we have put a man in scope of SDP brand and on foundations of social-democratic thought as a criteria for everything, and especially politics.

that life brings every day, month, and year. Almost every day since the elections I had the opportunity to share the joy with my fellow citizens, who are thrilled with the electoral results, because they know where they are headed when they are with me, unlike of those not having that vision. BH CITY REVIEW: You have revived Biha} in the last four-year mandate, what are your plans for the following four years? LIPOVA^A: As I already said on more that one occasion, the main issue for the period that follows is the issue of employment and opening of new working places, although that is not our responsibility per se. I am roughly considering all those aspects of economy where a step forward can be made, together with my closest associates. We have to work on improving purchasing power of our citizens, because without economical growth of the local community there is no fast and effective development. When I presented a vision of Biha} with one hundred thousand inhabitants to public one month ago, I had enough arguments to support that. In the next four years BIha} will be the region of synchronized development of infrastructure, economy and other domains where we have significant potentials. Besides active projects and the finalisation of projects we already announced, our city will be a dynamic environment desirable to settle down, and for that reason I take as realistic all I have announced.

BiH CITY REVIEW: U proteklom ~etverogodi{njem mandatu preporodili ste Biha}, {ta planirate u naredne ~etiri godine? LIPOVA^A: Kako sam ve} kazao u nekoliko navrata, sredi{nje pitanje u narednom periodu jeste pitanje zapo{ljavanja i otvaranja novih radnih mjesta, iako to nije u na{oj direktnoj nadle`nosti. No matter whether they would like to take a walk through untouched landscapes, enjoy viewing the numerous rapids of the Una, rest on the outing spots, fish, or to hitchhike on the Plje{evica. For a vacation we recommend the Klokot outing point. The spring of this river is about five kilometers away from Biha} and it is located at the bottom of the mountain Plje{evica. This river with a burly spring and a somewhat weaker course is the left confluent of the Una and the largest water source for providing water to the citizens of Biha}. There is a fish pond of Californian trout at the spring. The length of the river is around 6 kilometers, its average width 18 to 22 meters, and the depth ranges from 5 to 7 meters. According to research the spring of the Klokot is one of the strongest in BiH, corroborated by the fact that this source never dried out. The source of the Klokot hides many mysteries and secrets. Since always it has been known for its strength and water quantity and it has recently been discovered to be the deepest registered source thanks to explorations of the sub aquatic world of the Klokot made by the French-Bosnian expedition of divers.

Grada~ac reminds of paintings By old masters There are a few big and small towns which, at first sight, astonish with their beauty of painting experience, by that inevitable sound of impressionism. BIHCITYREVIEW like Grada~ac again gain on military and strategic significance and their accelerated renewal begins. Not long after the signing of the peace treaty, in Grada~ac’s fort the guard of 20 Azaps and an equestrian force made of 50 soldiers and officers gets formed. By the decree of Sultan Mahmud II, in 1711 Grada~ac becomes the seat of the captaincy. During those years in some notes it is mentioned that the existing Grada~ac’s fort is rather tightly built and surrounded by a trench. It is assured by three batteries which have 15 heavy cannons. The captain in command of Srebrenik and Soko is seated there. The construction of the existing fort complex in Grada~ac started in 1765 in the time of Mehmed-captain, continued during Osman- captain’s period in 1808 and finished during Murat-captain’s period in 1818/1819.

BIH KROZ VRIJEME / BIH THROUGH TIME 75

The most impressive is the central part of the fort “Pension Dragon of Bosnia”- an 18-meter-high, three-floor tower. That is at the same time the most interesting compound of the Old Town from the top of which, on beautiful days, the view stretches to Slavonia across the river Sava to the towers of the \akovac Cathedral. At the same time the pension was the residency of the captain but also the administration and authority seat of the captaincy where very important decisions were made. The whole complex is surrounded by high walls and it is only reachable through gatetowers (watch-towers). What makes this stone complex exceptional, are the carved adornments on all entrance gates unusual for similar facilities in BiH. Reliable data say that, inside of the Old Town, there was a mosque built around the year 1711, and written clues about it lead to 1804. The one thing which we have not paid much attention to, and which could be used for the tourism and cultural offer of Grada~ac, is the complex of underground hallways and rooms under the tower. Formerly used as a warehouse and stable for horses, today it could be rearranged for various cultural and hospitality & tourism contents. www.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

decided to move it later the same month so it could be treated deservingly in written and electronic media. The festival certainly deserves it, if for anything, then for the efforts and money invested. Event location of this 14th festival was traditionally Biha} hall Luke. The first festival evening was dedicated to tragically deceased singer To{e Proeski. To To{e forever was a kind of homage of the organiser and the owner of the festival to pay the respects to this tragically deceased singer together with his colleagues who took participation on this festival in the past 13 years of it existence. To{e Proeski won on the Biha} Festival 2003 with a song Nikada (Never). During the night about fifteen singers sang his hits to his honour, with the original band of To{e Proeski playing for the second time since he died, and according to some announcements, maybe even the last. Hari Vare{anovi}, Tony Cetinski, Boris Re`ak, Dona Ares, Amir Kazi} Leo, Hana Ju{i}, Ne{ad Selman, Irina Kapetanovi}, Jelena Radan, Martin Vu~i}, Lea Mijatovi}, Fuad Backovi} Deen, Toni Cetinski and Armin Muzaferija each in their own way sang well

BiH CITY REVIEW: Neka te ~udna osje}anja no}as preplavljuju? BH CITY REVIEW: You perform the song Pratim te (I Follow You) tonight. I wished to perform the last song by To{e The Hardest Thing since it’s the closest to me. I think To{e was just starting to do what he always wished to do. As far as I know, he listened to Whitesnake and rock music. But his band never performed that song live, and they never had the chance to try it with him, so I chose Pratim te (I follow you) which is also very strong, nice and emotional. BH CITY REVIEW: Did you have a chance to meet To{e? Yes, we met on a concert in Skenderija and talked for a while about rock music. He was very connected to that kind of music, but performed pop all his life, and this tonight will be a great tribute to the man and the great singer who made our life difficult tonight, since it’s very hard to perform his songs. I recently, had a chance to meet his professor of singing, who also offered me cooperation. To{e is our inspiration of what kind of person one should be above everything else. To{e had in his short life something someone couldn’t even in a hundred years time. The second night wasn’t even as half as glamorous as To{e forever night since the competition part of the program mostly consisted of those singers fighting for their place in show business. Twenty three songs were performed in a wide choice of genres – from pop, rock, dance, soft ballads to reggae and even one punk song. Significantly lesser number of pop songs with folk elements was evident, which were usually present on the previous festivals. The ticket was five BAM for each of the two nights, which is rather acceptable for our economic situation. Still, you could here the question if someone has an extra gratis ticket almost everywhere, and during the festival lot of youth remained outside the Luke hall hoping security would surely let them in just like that.

BOB OR POB STYLE BOB ILI POB STIL Victoria Beckham is once again the greatest trendsetter this Victoria Beckham je opet najve}a trendseterica ove sezone. After she first introduced bob style trend, now she is inpob trend, koji je u biti ’izvrnuti’ bob. Pob frizuru je mogu}e troducing so-called pob style, which is in fact bob turned upsidedown. It is possible to make pob hairstyle with any hair type or any shape of face. Namely, pob means that hair is shorter at the back of the neck with edges coming down longer closer to the face. Pob is also ideal to bring some sparkle into hairstyle since the edges could be coloured two or three shades lighter or darker than the rest of the hair and make the face so much fresher. All you need to maintain pob hairstyle is some wax and hairdryer to look pretty all day, and for somewhat glamorous look add some serum for shine and you are ready for evening out. CROP CHIC Another very popular style this season is short crop, called pixie. Pixie hairstyle could be ultra short and stylized closely alongside the head, or the hair can fall to the back of the head where it could be messy dried outwards. This hairstyle is www.bihcityreview.com 32 / 2008

napraviti s bilo kojim tipom kose i odgovara bilo kojem obliku lica. Perfektna frizura za dan i no}.

made by cutting hair on lot of layers, and then stylized with the brush and the hairdryer. Some gel or wax will suffice to stylize hair just before hair drying. This short and sexy hairstyle is ideal for ladies with the oval face, but it could be modified and adjusted to any shape of the face. STAGGERED IS STILL IN Staggered hairstyle has been modern for the last thirty years and this winter that hairstyle is in again but in somewhat different chic style. Hair is down to shoulders and could be adjusted to almost any hair type. It needs just some styling mousse for volume and the round brush. Perfect hairstyle for day and night. LONG AND SWEET Long hair will never be out, and there are more ways you can make your long hair modern and different this season. For classic, business look, we recommend low horsetail and chignons of all shapes and sizes. For evening out it is ideal to collect all your curls in a chignon, and leave as many curls as you can out of chignon to make puckish look. Still, if you prefer loose hair, it’s best to keep it flat and shiny. WINTER MAKE-UP Cold months are ahead of us and as temperatures change its time for the make-up to get the new dimension. During winter we can forget all light and joyful tones making us pretty during summer. Just like we pack all those light, short and see-through clothes to make room in the closet for sweaters and worm clothes, we have to change colour palette in our handbags for full shine in cold months. Glittering shades in pastel colours aren’t enough for cold winter days. Colours are deeper and richer this season and only as such have that true winter effect. Mat colours are always the good choice for colder months, so say goodbye to creamy eyeshades and shines and say hello to powder shades and lipsticks. To wear this look with style, you need to keep your skin clean and oil free. Mat shades should be in mocca or cinnamon colour, or in playfully green-turquoise shades. Even classical colours like grey or brown get more meaningful this season, but with additional tones of blue or red. HEAVY METAL STYLE DOMINATING THIS WINTER Chose metallic colours for special occasions this season. Tones of the first shade layer are silverfish or golden, on which are then put layers from pink to copper with lot of shades and tones. If you decide to use the metallic colours, it’s best if it’s in powder because creamy shades are hard to put-on when

puderasta sjenila i karmine. I tokom zime ostaje pravilo ovoljetne sezone: ako nagla{avate usne, nemojte nagla{aviti o~i, i obratno.

we speak of mentioned shades. Cheek colours can also be metallic, but the lips must stay neutral to avoid unwanted effects this make-up style can unveil. Make your lipstick in mat colour, but first shape your lips nicely with a lipliner which give your lips the definition it needs. In stead of direct appliance of lipstick to your lips, it’s better to use the brush for lipstick appliance. The rule from the last summer is still valid during winter: if you point out lips, don’t point out eyes and vice versa.
